There is a particular kind of nerve it takes to enter an amateur open in a city where you don’t know a soul. I found a partner through the tournament’s own chat — a Portuguese player who needed one too — and we met for the first time twenty minutes before our opening match. By the end of the day we were swapping numbers and planning a rematch.

The sign-up

Amateur opens are easier to enter than the professional aura of the sport suggests. A registration link, a level category, and a willingness to be paired with a stranger is all it takes. The level brackets mean you play people roughly your standard — competitive enough to matter, friendly enough to enjoy.

The instant belonging

Here’s the thing nobody tells you: a tournament gives a solo traveler an instant place to belong. For one day you’re not a tourist — you’re a competitor with a draw, a partner, and a reason to be exactly where you are. The shared nerves dissolve the language gap faster than any phrasebook.

Why it’s the move

If you want to understand a city’s padel scene fast, don’t just book courts — enter something. One amateur open teaches you more about the local game, and gives you more lasting contacts, than a week of solo bookings ever could.
